Group Therapy

Research has found that group therapy is as effective as individual therapy. Futher, when the issues involve certain topics (e.g. relationships, interpersonal skills, social isolation, development of coping skills, etc.), group therapy is often more effective. Members often describe experiencing they are "not the only one" in addressing their concerns when they participate in group therapy. 

The EKU Counseling Center has groups that are offered throughout the year which focus on the development of effective personal and social skills and the resolution of various types of personal concerns. Common topics addressed include: depression, anxiety and worry, stress reduction, relationship issues, college adjustment, and various mental health skill building techniques.

Drop-In! These groups are open to any/all currently enrolled EKU students. Note: some groups have limited space therefore arriving 10-15 minutes early is recommended. The following are the Drop-In Groups are currently being offered by the Counseling Center:

Relaxation & Meditation Group
Experience various types of relaxation and meditation techniques to help calm and relax the mind and body. No experience necessary to participate. Yoga mats, pillows, and blankets are provided. This drop-in group is open to all students, faculty, and staff. Attend as many sessions as you want! (see flier attached below)
Meets weekly 3-4pm on Mondays & Thursdays, and Tuesdays 6-7pm in Whitlock Bldg Room 568

Beyond Labels-LGBTQ
Having difficulty finding a safe space to address concerns experienced on the journey of identification, sexuality, and gender? Concerns such as (but not limited to) family, student success, relationships, anxiety, etc. are often topics of discussion. This group is designed to provide that safe place for LGBTQ students to meet and address these and a variety of other concerns that may arise on their journey.
Meets weekly on Wednesdays 1:15-2:15pm in Whitlock Bldg Room 568


To register for these groups, a meeting with a counselor is required before joining group. Come to the EKU Counseling Center (Whitlock Bldg., Room 571 or call 859-622-1303) a few days before the group meets. A brief meeting with the group leader will be scheduled to make sure the group of interest addresses your needs.

Understanding Self and Others
Come join a safe and energizing group of your peers to explore patterns of how you perceive yourself and relate with others. The aim of this group is developing greater understanding and acceptance of self, changing current behaviors and developing better ways of coping.
Meets Tuesdays 9:30-11am or Fridays 1-2:30pm, Whitlock Building Room 571 

Dealing With A Loved One's Addiction-The Cleaning House Group
Is your life cluttered with emotional garbage created by a friend, family member, or partner’s substance use? In the supportive environment of this group, we will discuss the "mess" and how to "clean house". 
Meets Mondays from 1-2:30pm, Whitlock Building Room 571

Healing Unseen Wounds
Feel your emotions are out of control? Unsure how to cope with stress, relationships, problems, life? Using Dialectical Behavior Therapy (DBT), you will learn skills to manage symptoms that arise after experiencing a personal trauma. These skills include addressing emotional dysregulation, difficulty dealing with distress, interpersonal relationship problems, and difficulty staying in the present moment. Learn how others cope with problems, learn to build trust, and increase your ability to cope in an engaging, safe environment.
Meets Wednesdays from 2:30-4pm, Whitlock Building Room 571

Do you find yourself struggling with body image, healthy eating, and/or dangerous weight loss habits? College can be one of the most stressful times in a person's life. When stressed, we often turn to unhealthy habits that can be hard to break. Disordered eating and eating disorders are frequently the outcomes of our stress. We invite any individuals who struggle with food or body image to attend our group. To attend group: call the EKU Psychological Clinic (859-622-2356) to schedule a group screening to ensure the group meets your needs.
