Transitioning from battlefield to classroom...

We are thankful for veterans and their service.

Our veterans have experienced and overcome many challenges during their military service. The skills, strength, and resilience developed during their service can help with many of the new challenges they will experience in the pursuit of higher education. Veterans can be extremely successful students. However, they may also experience different challenges than traditional college students, or experience the common challenges in a somewhat different way.

Common Barriers to College Adjustment

Common challenges include:

  • Difficulties adjusting to the return
    to civilian and college lifestyle
  • Mood Swings
  • Attention and Concentration Problems
  • Test Anxiety
  • Math Difficulties
  • Reading Difficulties
  • Substance Dependence
  • Post-Traumatic Stress

The EKU Counseling Center can help with these challenges. We offer free services to all enrolled students, and referral to the appropriate specialist when needed. Call (859) 622-1303 or stop by the Whitlock Bldg., Room 571 (formerly known as the Student Services Building) to find out more, or to set up an initial appointment.

Another source of help is the Lexington Vet Center. The Vet Center offers peer-to peer counseling for combat veterans. Anyone who has been deployed is eligible. The Vet Center is usually able to get people in very quickly for their first appointment—when you call, appointments can often be scheduled for the next day. Call 859-253-0717 for an appointment or more information.

We welcome our veterans home.
